Front 10 bolt, what years have the 28 splines and what years have the 30 spline? Can you just change out your spiders or side gears to switch between the 2 axles? Are they the same thickness (1.31 28 spline I have read)

The best that I can tell is that the front 10-bolts switched to the 30-spline shafts in '89 and were used until '91 when all of the 1/2 ton rated trucks went to IFS. The 30-spline shafts are 1.31" while the 28-spline are 1.28".

I don't think you can put the bigger 30-spline shafts into a 28-spline carrier because the 30-spline carriers were actually machined out at the journals to fit the bigger shaft. I would also guess that you could put 28-spline shafts into a 30-spline carrier if you changed the side gears.
