I'm postin this for flblazer.....he had his 10 bolt spit an axle today, [IMG] should he just put the clip back on and roll or not? we were supposed to meet up w/ big blu blazer over the weekend and hes really wantin to go but I dont think he should put it back on. I feel theres gotta be a reason why the c-clip popped off. whats ya'll s experience w/ this??

The C clip popped off??? Man... yuck. Does the c-clip look ok and match up to the other one? I can't say I've ever heard of it happening and I would saw put it back and try her again... it pops off again and you have problems. Just make sure it is in there. I'd also try not to take it at high speeds till you test it out... no fun losinga a wheel at 65 mph.

I've had this happen to me...
It was on my old 89 S-10 Blazer 10 bolt. The groove for the C-clip began to wear a bit I guess and one day I noticed my wheel and axle in my side view mirror...[IMG]
I coasted to a stop so I wouldn't mess up the brakes and tried to stuff it back in without any luck.

I had it towed to work and fixed it after work. I used a hardened frame washer and ground it down using a belt sander...I did this slowly and kept the washer cool. When I got it down to less than 1/16" i notched the washer so it would fit in the groove on the axle but needed to be forced on. I put the washer on the very end of the axle and the C-clip in behind it. It was a snug fit but it worked. I drove it for another 2 years after that with no troubles at all.

I think if that had happened today i would replace the axle instead of dinking around like i did back then...
The C-clip on mine had just dropped out, there was nothing wrong with it. There was just a little too much slop in the C-clip groove.

As Rene said, check the c-clip and groove. As some people talk bad about the c-clip axle, its not all bad. You might look at the pinion shaft as well. Thats the pin that goes right through the center of the carrier.

The only way to spit an axle and not break it is for the axle to move too far towards the center of the vehicle, and the c-clip to fall off. Factory set up, this won't happen. With wear to the pinion shaft, c-clip, c-clip groove, or end of the axle, it can happen.

If the the c clip just falls out then you have "slop" in the rear end. Its wore out. Either the side washers or the spider gears washers.

C-clip can't fall out unless the axle moves IN. (or it breaks in half)That would be worn axle end, thin c-clip, worn c-clip groove, or worn pinion shaft. Worn side gears/side gear washers would let the axle move out, not in.

I retract the above. I was thinking of this before, and I obviously lost my train of thought. Check the washer underneath the side gear for wear, as that would allow the side gear to move closer to the outside of the vehicle, increasing the exposure of the c-clip to the open area that it could fall off on, if the axle were to move inwards, and the side gear moved outwards. Sorry!

You said side washer and I said side washer. I think were talking about the same thing!! And if you have a thin washer the axle could move in or out.
