It can be done, works OK on the street, you'll have to run more air than you would normally off road to keep from popping a bead. Looks kind of dumb too, and will cause premature tire wear especially without lots of air in the tires. Not the ideal setup, but OK for a temporary deal. My brother ran this way for a while, he blew his 12 bolt and put in a 14, needed 8 lug wheels and bought 10's knowing he was going to a wider tire when he lifted it a few months later.

I have two different sets of tires, 33x10.50 BFG AT on 8.5" rims, and 33x12.50 BFG MT on 10" rims. I do admit that the 10.50 on 10" rims looks a little horky but it can be done and you will sacrifice normal tire wear (outer surfaces of the tread will wear out faster as opposed to inner (center) surface for wide tires on narrow rims). Would look at matching tires with recommended rim width.

I too ran 10 inch rims with 31x10.50 tires for years. Looked a little odd, but set me up better for later. I also ran 32x11.50 tires on the same rims. Looked and wore fine. I now have 35x12.50s on 10 inch wheels. Get the 10 inch now if you plan to upgrade tires within say the next 2 years. otherwise wait. If you get bigger tires more than 2 years down the road, you will probably want a newer style rim at that time.
