I want to get a better CB, and was looking around the 100 dollar range. What would you guys and gals buy?

On a side note, the center wire in my co-ax cable shouldn't have continuity with the outer shell (wire mesh)? Right?

no it shouldnt. The mesh is the ground and the center conductor is well the conductor.

when you check your coax for shorts check it with both ends disconnected first. Depending on the radio or antenna, there could be a connection to ground which is transparant at RF freqs.

In the $100.00 price range you should be able to get a decent strait AM 40 channel CB. I personally prefer a sideband unit. Those will cost alittle more.

So the antenna, may be connected to the ground? I thought that was a no no.

I checked my coax alone and it is short free, but when connected to my antenna, it has cotinutity.

A 6 foot fiberglass whip. I don't know who makes it. I kind of want to go to the 102 steel whip because of the good things I've heard about them, and so I could clip the top down when needed.

Eli, stop by Apollo Communications. They are on the west side of town. 43rd and Northern.

I bought my current CB and Wilson 1000 mag mount antenna there about 6 months ago. The guy knows his stuff and can recommend a good setup for you. He keeps quite a bit in stock so he has a good selection from cheap to mucho $$$.

    Harley

P.S. Vito's pizza is in the same building. they have the best pizza in town. Just an FYI. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Gets you away from the radio rambos, you can talk greater distances, lot of locals up BSing every night (Well, around here anyways) . Once I went sideband, I'll never be happy with strait AM 40 channel CB anymore.

No, there should not be short on this type of antenna.
Some base-loaded (short) antennas use tuning circuits that can show a short at DC and work at RF. Check your mount for shorts.

Ok, I'll take the antenee off and check just the mount. Thanks.

I don't think I need to get away from any hams on the radio, there seems to be noone on anyways.

Cool. I've been looking at ebay for a while now, and it seems something good is always going for a good price. But other than price, I have no idea what makes a good CB. I've heard to stay away from realistic radio shack cbs.

For just a strait CB's, Try Cobra, Uniden, and Ranger. I like the modles with sideband, but you may not need all that.

I know how that go's. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif The more I think about it, I have to recomend The Ranger 296 It's roughly $150.00 , but well worth it in my opinion. It also has sideband for if you ever want to use it. [IMG]
