    10B swap to 14B SF -- U-joint ?\'s***UPDATE

    A little background...
I have completed the swap from a 10B to a 14B SF in the K5. I got all (brakes, axles, everything) hooked up. This is a six lug axle I have put together, orginally an 8 lug. This axle is from a 3/4 ton 4x4 1984-1988 Diesel Suburban. I am putting this into a 1987 K-5.

    Now...

Everything has bolted up just great. After getting the brakes straight, I go to hook up the driveshaft...

Now I checked this. It appeared ( also measured, not really well, but ) to be the same U-joint. But I find out it is not./forums/images/icons/mad.gif It is SOOOO close its not even funny. It almost fit into the yoke. It was a little wider but not by much. I ground just a tiny bit off the ears that hold it in. It goes in... I think I'm ok, but no. The joint on the K5 is too small, not width, but diameter of the caps. I happened to have one cap that was stuck in the axle when I scrounged it. It was a larger diameter than the caps on the K5.

Does anyone has any input on this? Do I need a new driveshaft? If so, how soon can Jesse at highangle build me one? I am at a loss, I have been waiting do do this swap for a while, and this little, yet major thing is stopping me.. ARRGH!!

    Thanks in advance,
    John

i just did the same swap last week, the 14sf uses a 3/4 ton joint. go to your local parts store, napa etc. and tell them you need a conversion joint for 1/2 ton drive shaft to 3/4 ton rear end. be sure you get the u-joint for your drive shaft that has the clips on the inside.

remember this goofy board you reply to each person directly and it emails them.
unlike other boards where you reply to the thread

I have an 87 Jimmy and swapped in a 14SF from an 85 3/4 ton burb. When I did this to mine I ended up using the 447 conversion u-joint.
