I might be showing my ignorance, but I thought 14 bolt FF were 10.5". I was reading petersen's 4W&OR and they were talking about low gearsets. They said something in a chart about an 11.5" 14b.

Now is this the new one in the 2500HD's? I know mine does not look like a common 14b. It has a fill plug on the cover and is shaped diiferently than a reg 14b of past.

    Any insights?
    John

They have a new 11.5 ring gear 14bolt for the 3500HD trucks and 2500HD if it has the new Duramax or 8.1 BB. That thing is huge with Disc brakes and a 1410 series yoke with a harmonic balancer on it!

That's what I thought guys. Thanks for clearing that up. I know my 2500HD with the 8.1 is a powerhouse. That U-joint with that balancer is the coolest thing. The axle is just mammoth.

    Thanks again,
    John

Not only that, but it comes with factory disc brakes.

Wonder wht the rear end in the 01 2500 Burban is with the 8.1, I know it got disc but I have not really looked close at it other to say it looks like a 14 bolt!

  9. sounds bad ass, but sh!t, isn't the old 14 bolt damn neer indestrucable? the disks and the 1410s sound cool though! they need to go back to a solid front axle thats bigger than a dana 60 with 1410s.

The 11.5" rear axle in the new HD trucks is NOT a Dana 80. It is a new design made be American Axle, same company that makes all the corp. GM axles. The Suburban with the 8100 gets either the old 10.5" 14 bolt (with disc brakes), or the 14 bolt semi-floater, not sure which. The 11.5" 14 bolt was new for 2001, not used in 1992 - 2000. The Dana 80 was used in dually applications only.

In a ? about the suburban. The 6.0L gets the semifloating 14b. The 8.1 gets the 10.5 FF 14b.

This is common knowledge that I am 100% certain of, and there is one under my truck out in the parking lot. Believe it or not, I don't care.

so i went down to the chev dealer and snapped a few pics of the 3rd axle that you people insist on calling a 14bolt.
    1- the real 14 bolt
2- the tiny semifloater that isnt a 14bolt
3- this new 11.5 ring gear thing that also isnt a 14bolt

why would you want to glue the nomenclature on yet another axle, create a new name for a new dif
one is from a single wheel the other is a dually

Looks like it has 14 bolts to me.
So it's shaped different, they redesigned it. :p

You're right though, it's not the same as the old FF that had the ring gear further to the passenger side.
    Thanks for the pics.
