12 bolt spider gear welding...

    ok i own a 79` chevy pickup with a 12 bolt gm.I want to put a locker in it but there to much money i was worndering if it is easy to just weld the spider gears together.If so what excalty do u weld together if anyone couyld help i would apperite it.. thanks

    if i was to weld i would go this route and just fill the voids in the side gears or spider gears. you dont have to worry about whether the housing is slightly bent or if you welded the side gears perfectly true on the carrier.

    Jo-Jo at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://island4x4.com/index.html>Island4x4.com</A> gave me these pics and is working on a tech story about this method.

    Thats exactly the way i welded up my 14 bolt...works slicker than whaleshit on an icefloe.[​IMG] I did the 4 spiders rather than the side gears though.
