I did mine in southern Cal about 3 1/2 years ago. Did mine with a Posi, 4:56, and full rebuild kit (including Bearings). Just over $1200.00.

Depending on where you go here are a few ideas on mail order parts. Expect to pay around $565 for a Detroit Locker (full case locker - the best) for 4.56 gear ratio, $170 for gears, $100 for full rebuild kit with bearings and seals. Try to Contact Tim Swanson (forgot his username). He sold me a brand new set of gears and install kit for under $200 shipped. With a Detroit, aftermarket axleshafts and a properly setup gearset, you can run up to a 38" tire. I have done this for over a year without problems. I have the Warn Full Floater which relieves bearing side loads plus provides a stronger axle shaft. Being Full Floater makes it nice if you have problems enternally, you can still flat tow the vehicle. I know you will hear this from many people - Why not install a 14 bolt? Have the hubs drilled for 6 lug. The Detroit is cheaper - Gears will be a little higher. But, you will not need to upgrade with a full floater kit or aftermarket axles. I run my 12 bolt because I bought all the parts cheap enough. I plan to go either 1 ton or 2.5 ton in the next year so my stuff will be up for sale. Its not a problem with the 12 bolt design - its just a Ring Gear strength issue with me. I have broken a diff and a gearset in the past - so keep that in mind.

    Good luck.

Depending on timeframe, you might be better off looking for a beat up 3/4 ton with 4.56's installed. One just sold here locally for $500 (the guy stripped the axles and sold the frame/cab for $200). You would have to pony up for 8 lug rims/tires but those can be had at a decent price if you look. This way you would have upgraded axles (may be lucky and score a rear with a locker already installed), rims/tires for about the same (depending on what the availablility is in your area) or a slightly more. Again you don't have to go this route, but it is something to look into.

Depends on if you are upgrading the front or rear axle. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Keep your eyes open too!! I came across someone that just wanted his wreck taken away. He had installed some 4:11s in it within 6 months. I took it home pulled out mine installed these and I'm ready to go! I was VERY lucky.
