Thought I lost my 3/4 clutch pack in my 700R4 going to Blazer-Fest this year, turned out it was my govener gear.

    I only had 1st and reverse.It wouldn't shift out of 1st.

I was doing about 75mph when the tach peg out as it slammed into 1st.

I got the idea to check it from a previous thread.

You got more problems then you think. RV forum I'm on a guy has that happen and toasted the 454 in his Airstream when that happend. He had just bought the camper and was cross country. He made it to Dallas TX when it cut loose. Bought another and it happend agin in 500 miles. Second time he wasn't so lucky and took out the motor. THis camper had been siting for quite a while.

Here is why it happend. The drive gear has rust on it and it's going to do that to the next one.

Ok, so it happens because of rust... but how do you prevent it from happening? (other than getting a TH350/TH400) /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

That is the worst governor gear I have ever seen. It's not just worn down, but torn apart. Are you sure there is no grit or foreign objects in there?

The RV one happend on a TH400. ANY with the plastic gear can develope this problem if the tranny sits for a long time and that gear gets rusty.

Rust..well that could be.The truck sat for 6 months while I was doing the body and paint!
I couldn't see the gear on the output shaft but the new gear meshed in smoothly when I put it back in.
I'll prob. end up pulling the transfer case so I can visualize the gear on the output shaft.

I'm planninmg on putting a few miles on this one then I will pull the govener and check it for wear.

I know GM doesn't.I don't know of anybody else making the gear.Poss. a trans. shop could answer that question.

    Deja-Voo!

The govenor gear in my 81 G10 van's TH350 "C" tranny looked exactly like that one, when I bought it for 500 bucks with a "blown tranny"..it was only 10 years old,had 138,000 on it,and was in decent shape!..

I drove it home in first gear under 30 mph (good thing it had 3.08's then!)..when I discovered the govenor could be at fault when a guy I know who runs a tranny shop told me how to remove it,I found it looking like an apple someone chewed down to the center!..I yanked another one from a junkyard tranny and popped it in,and it shifted perfectly once again!..:D

I drove the van to Nashville TN,NY several times, and it now has 180,000 miles--the tranny only failed to upshift once in the past 15 years I've owned it--I took the govenor out, expecting to see its gear ground up again..but to my suprise,it was still perfect..further investigation revealed the detent cable had come out of its bracket, and was jammed in the "passing gear" position!..once that was fixed,it was shifting great again..

I've not heard of rust causing govenor gears to strip out--I figured it was just heat,or perhaps a worn bushing on the output shaft letting it walk around and hog out the govenor gear..I suppose it could happen though..

I wonder how many tranny's with stripped govenor gears get "rebuilt" for nothing.. ..if you have first gear and reverse only, don't assume its junk!..usually GM tranny's lose reverse first if the clutches are shot, not having troubles with the upshifting...

I know...I was doing a search and found this post.
Thought I might as well update it again.

Oh ya..I forgot to mention in the orig post that the metal govner drive gear had quite a bit of rust on it...chunky kinda rust.

I figure that's what ate the plastic Govner gear.

    two things..

A govenor regulates the speed upshifting occours at,and is tied in with the modulator, the two act as a team to ensure it upshifts and downshifts at the right speeds..

The gear on it is probably plastic so places like AMMACO can tell you "your tranny is shot",and they put in a new 12 dollar gear, and charge you for a complete rebuild!.. --my van had been brought to a tranny shop before I bought it--they told its former owner "the tranny is junk"..so he sold it to me cheep!..I suspected it wasn't "junk"--but didn't care,I had a TH350 to toss in it if I had too--its a half hour job on a van!..but I didn't have too!.:D

There may be other reasons for the gear being nylon or plastic, most likely COST factor--it would cost GM much more to make metal ones..might be other reasons too..like if the govenor seized in its bore (not unheard of!)--it could wipe out the worm gear on the tranny's mainshaft that drives it!..:doah:
