14 bolt and Dana 60 ring gear #\'s???

Can you guys tell me my gear ratio and production date /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Everything came from a donor truck and I believe both axles are originals. The weird part is that this truck wasn't a '72 (I'm fairly sure it was at least an '85 or '86) and Dana 60's didn't come out until 1976 right? HELP!!! /forums/images/graemlins/bow.gif

    14 Bolt ring gear reads:
    3992484 11 41 9 72 GM2

    And the Dana 60 is:
    10 1 71 DANA 34508 A3D33X 41-11

The upper corner of the diff. housing reads: G40386

    Thanks guys

    EDIT BOM# on front reads
    61021 1 SJ4 6 13 4 8B

9 72 is likely the production date, but from your avatar pic that actually seems unlikely. It's going to be 3.73. Count the teeth on the pinion and ring and match them to one set of numbers if you want to be 100% sure, one guy in the club I'm in had an R&P that was stamped wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Searching didn't help much the second time either... can anyone else help me out so I know a little more about my axles?

11-41 is the gear count and 9 72 should be the casting date

on the d60 10 1 71 is the casting date but they didnt have the d60 front until 76 /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: 14bff AND Dana 60 ring gear # question

that's my problem... I'll have to check the numbers again but I'm 90% sure that's what I saw /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
are there any other numbers I can grab off the diff. to tell what year it's from? there are no numbers on the axle tube but there are some on the top of the housing.

Re: Mysterious 14 bolt and Dana 60 ring gear #\'s???

You can ID the 60 by the BOM number stamped on the front of the drivers side axle tube to the right of the pumpkin (as you are looking at it from the front). I would guess that those are not date codes on the gears.

I got a PM from Robert about this and told him about the BOM, too. I also mentioned to him the gears may have been swapped in if they are dated '71, since the D60 fronts didn't start in the GM line til '77. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: Mysterious 14 bolt and Dana 60 ring gear #\'s???

Maybe it says 77 on the gear and not 71? I'll go out and check again for the BOM it may be under all the sludge I missed with my wire brush the first time /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

And 3.73's suck!!! I knew this thing was a dog with the 38's /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif I found the BOM /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif or part of it.
    61020 1 SJ4 6 13 4 8B not clear... maybe it reads
    51021 1 SJA 6 13 4 88?

Re: Mysterious 14 bolt and Dana 60 ring gear #\'s???

a trip to the Dana 60 bible told me that this axle is either a 610201 -84-88 CUCV axle or a 61202 -84-85 K30 axle, either way it's not a 71 anything according to my numbers /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif did I get it right?
