I just acquired two 14 bolts, both out of mid-seventies 3/4 tons. Was a Detroit locker ever available from the factory? I don't think either one of these was ever opened up and when I pulled the cover on both of them I saw something that looks very different from any open 12 bolt rearend I have seen. I know what a gov-loc looks like and that isn't what it is. I'm thinking that they are both open but I can just barely see one spider gear through a hole in the plate that the ring gear bolts to. On the pinion side of the ring gear it just looks like a spool with strengthening ribs. Is this just what a FF open carrier looks like? Thanks

Yes, the carrier itself actually splits in half and if you split it you'll see a cross with 4 spiders on it...if its open.

Sounds like an open carrier to me. It's a pretty beefy hunk of steel. The only 14-bolt FF's that I know of that came with Detroit Lockers were those installed under some military vehicles. Also, there are no spider gears after the installation of a Detroit Locker, if you can see a spider gear than it doesn't have a Detroit Locker installed.

Rotate the carrer and count how many pinion shafts there are for the spider gears. The open diff had 4 spider gears, while the Gov-Loc had only 3.

You can see a picture of the insides of a 14-bolt FF at http://www.coloradok5.com/gearinstall.shtml. From the picture, you can't even tell that there's a Detroit Locker in that diff. It installs inside the factory open diff, replacing the stock spider and side gears.

Not all 14 Bolt FFs had 4 pin carriers, some had 2 or 3. You must have the 4 pin carrier to install a Detroit. They have 4 spider gears in a circle, for a total of 6 spider gears.

Hi Pete, I've never seen a 2-spider 14 bolt FF. Sounds rather weak. I know that the Gov-Loc's used the wierd 3-spider set up. All the open ones I've ever seen had 4 spider gears. When you say there's a total of 6 spider gears, are you counting the side gears as spider gears? Mine had 4 spider gears and 2 side gears. All got replaced by Detroit Locker parts.

And indeed, the Detroit Locker will only fit in the 4-pinion, open carrier. PowerTrax has a locker available for the Gov-Loc cases now, but I'd much rather have the Detroit Locker for its legendary ability to take abuse. [IMG]
