14 ff carrier won\'t come out

WTF,
I can't get the carrier out of the housing on my 14 ff. I removed the shafts and all the bolts that hold the carrier in. I can pry it out partially but it still will not come all the way out. Any ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

You need to back off the adjusters. Move just the left one and keep track of how many turns you needed to move it.

Prybar. Perhaps two, so it won't spin around as you lay into it.

Back at the wrecking yard, we used torsion bars with one end cut off at an angle /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

How in the world could you get the adjusters all the way out with the carrier still in the case??? On each side of the carrier bearings you should see a round sleeve with a bunch of holes in it. Take a screwdriver that will fit in the holes and loose them (as mentioned, just loosen the left side and count the number of turns). This should releave all pressur on the carrier and it should just lift out.

You shouldn't need to use a prybar on a 14 bolt carrier. well, maybe a little bit, but you'll hardly need any pressure on it. I think you need to back the adjusters off a bit more.

I've used a big pipe, stick it in the carrier pry it against the housing.
just give it a hard hit against the housing, it should just pop loose.

Re: 14 ff carrier won\'t come out

The prying works for most conventional carriers but just isn't necessary for the C14 FF. If you're lucky it won't fall when you back the adjusters off...but to be safe I usually stick a piece of plywood under the housing so if it does fall it won't chip a tooth or something.

Are the axles completely out or just unbolted? I've done that.../forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: 14 ff carrier won\'t come out

I took the adjusters all the way out. What the hell is going on? Do I have to take anything off besides the two main caps, axle shafts, and the adjuster nuts? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: 14 ff carrier won\'t come out

Once the main caps are off and the axle shafts are completely out there are two bent steel clips holding the side adjusters. It's one small bolt on each side. Remove these...then with a small round punch rotate the adjusters and be prepared to catch the carrier as it falls out. Scribe mark the adjusters and the housing and keep track of how many rotations the adjusters go.

Ok, I backed the adjusters all the way out on my axle too, I got mine out with some pulling, but now how to set it up properly again? Is this where gear marking compound and dial indicators come in handy? Is there a method to this to make it easy on me?

Re: 14 ff carrier won\'t come out

and now that i have screwed the pooch, how do I get it back to working condition? Should I bring both adjusters back in evenly as a starting point?

Your pinion depth will still be OK, but you'll need to reset the ring gear using the adjusters and some marking compound. West coast differential's website has a good page on good patterns.

You could also pm Shaggy, he recently set up some 5.13's in his 14 bolt.

Actually you probably won't even need to run a pattern on it, you just need to reset the backlash. You'll need a dial depth indicator and a way to mount it solidly to the case. Then follow the instructions for setting backlash on a screw type diff.

Shaggy is right, I just did one at the shop yesterday.

"Once the main caps are off and the axle shafts are completely out there are two bent steel clips holding the side adjusters. "- tRustyK5

Also, the retaining clips for the adjusters are bolted to the main caps...so removing the main caps means the retaining clips are already out.

Ok this sounds like a pretty good deal. But, since there are adjusters on each side doesn't that mean that the ring gear can be moved left and right? What does that affect?

Those adjusting nuts are what sets the backlash for the 14FF. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
