    Can I put 4.88 gears on a stock carrier with 4.10s? The axle is a 14BFF off a 3/4 86ish Suburban.

    Another thing I was quoting gear prices, the front D44 is offered in 4.89, you don't think it will be bad to run 4.88 in the rear? Its really not different and I would run it, but you wise men know more then I.

    You can run a 4.88 on a 4.10 carrier you just have to buy the thick gear set. As far as the 4.89 or 4.88, It seems some of the manufacturers have slightly different numbers like that. Chevy is 4.10 and I think dodge/mopar is 4.11. I don't know why they are like that of if it would really matter. could be that when the gear teeth are divided one rounds up and the other down.

    Try to actually FIND a set of 5.13's in stock anywhere. I'm hearing they're on national backorder and nobody has them.....

    Could someone make a list in this post as to what gearsets will fit certain carriers of specific axles? That would be awesome, as I too would like to know what gears (thick/thin and ratio) I can put in my 3.73 D44 and 14 bolt FF. Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    The D44 carrier split is 3.92-up & 3.73-down, so you will need a new carrier to go up to 4.10 or numerically higher.

    The 14BFF carrier split is 4.56-up & 4.10-down. You can reuse your current carrier for OEM 4.10's, but you will need thick gears for 4.56, 4.88 & 5.13's. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    From what I understand, the 4.56-up carrier is harder to find lower gears for. The thick gearsets are easier to come by. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

    Although weird, this is true. I guess it's becauase of where the break is, not too many 4.56 and up vehicles were produced, so the 4.10 and down carrier is more popular and has more gearsets available.

    Thanks!

    So, say I wanted to put 4.88's in my, currently 3.73, D44 and 14 bolt, I'd have to buy;
    *4.88 "thick" gears for the 14 bolt
    *4.88 standard gears for a D44 (is there any distinction between front/rear?)
    *3.92-up carrier for the D44 (is there any problem putting a different carrier in an existing housing? Do you just swap over the carrier bearings and call it good?)

    Sorry 'bout the questions, but the differential is one place I haven't ventured beyond simply changing the gear oil.

    Your shopping list is missing install kits. Both the front and rear will need to be set up from scratch, to get the pattern on the new gears correct.

    Right, I knew that...just didn't include it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Gear change time is a long way away.
