OK since you dont chage the carrier when you put a detroit in a 14bolt do you have to pull it all apart or does it go in like a lockright? And if you gotta pull it apart has anyone done it in there drive way and what kind of SPECIAL tools are needed?

Yes, the carrier must come out and apart. No special tools needed other than a torque wrench.

But you will need a dial indicator to check your backlash when you put the carrier and gears back in the housing...

You dont need any specials tools at all. Just mark the screw adjusters and then loosen them up to take out the carrier after the bearing caps have been removed. Once the carrier is out. Pull the spiders and in goes the detroit. Put the carrier back in and make sure to put the screw adjusters back to the original position and you dont have to worry about backlash or all that stuff. We did one in 20 minutes once using air tools. Didnt even take the tires off. Just slide the axles out some.

I might add that you must have an open carrier for a detroit to fit. If you have a gov-loc then you will need a new carrier.
