What's the deal with 1986 K5's and 350 crate engines? I'm swapping from a 305 to 350 and I remember there was something with the 1986 model year that has come up before on this forum. Anybody remember?

I don't know if this is much help, but I'm getting ready to replace the 350 in my 78k5 with the Chevy crate motor. The only thing I know of is that the 86 uses the 2 piece rear seal, and 87 and up uses a one piece. Hope this helps.

My 86 motor had a different flywheel & drivers side manifold than the pre 80 350 block & heads I installed

1986 was the last year for the 4 bolt main.

  5. The 86 was the first year of the one piece rear main seal. I have just done this swap in my 86 K5 from 305 to 350 86 GM Crate Motor. Flexplate is also different for 86 - 91 small block Chevy's.
