I have access to a 85 blazer that is in great condition but I
hate dealing with Smog. Originally I wanted to get a pre-1974
Blazer, but those are few and far between.

Any of you know if the frame of the 1st gens and 2nd Gens are interchangable? I want to buy a rustbucket 1st gen and drop the 85 body on it, So technically the Blazer would be
Smog exempt and I would be a happy camper.

    Any past experiences or tips?
    Thanks

Hate to burst your bubble but I think(ouch) that the DMV goes off the body for the year not the frame. So if yo were to do the oposite you can doge the smog devils!

(I just got back fromthe DMV)

Actually they go off the Frame/Engine Combo, but since
it would be a pre-1974 it would be Exempt and all they would go off would be the Frame.

Actually, some 4X4 magaziine is doing the same to a Suburban they are doing PreRunner style.
They have a 73 frame and totally backhalved it and tube-framed it. Then they are going to top it off with a Current style suburban body. Complete with Big-Block.

The frames are not the same. You will have to find a 73....
The front springs are shorter, the wheelbase is shorer, and I'm sure none of the body mounts will line up.

Aren't the second gen frames either narrower or wider than first gen too?

I've got a 70 Suburban mounted to a 77 Suburban frame. The first generation frame was wider than the second generations- which means you'll have to fabricate all your mounts. The wheelbase is also different (my rear axle had to be moved forward about 3 inches). Understand your talking about a blazer, not a suburban but I'm sure there are a lot of similiarities as far as the frame.

I'd go with the 73 Blazer frame. Everything will bolt up just fine and 73s are known for rusting out badly, so you should be able to find one with very little body left cheap.
