how hard is it to swap a 208 to a 205 for a SM465. I want the 'cheap' SYE kit, and the option of lower gearing/doubler someday. Do I need an adapter, or a new shaft?. I foget the measurements, but the 208 with the adapter is really long, how much could I add to the drivefshaft by swapping? I would like to keep it cheap, simple, and easy if I can, but it never goes that way...

There isn't a cheap easy anything when push comes to shove. I did this exact swap. First of all the 465 in front of that NP208 is a 32 spline unit and well worth keeping. I wish I had known this when I did my swap. I swapped a complete tranny and T-case in...a 10 spline 465 and 205 combo. If i were to do it again I would have kept the 465 and either found a 32 spline 205 or modify a more common 10 spline 205 to the 32 spline input gear. The face of the NP205 should be able to be re-drilled for the 6 hole adaptor pattern of the 208's adaptor. The big if is output shaft length etc etc.

The cheapest way is to swap a complete 465/205 combo in and have new shafts made. Next would be to swap in a 241 which is a direct bolt up as long as it has a 32 spline input...then add a SYE kit. Last would be to convert a 205 to 32 spline input and deal with the probs as they come up...then add the cost of new custom length shafts.

I think it's more rare than factory D60 fronts. The SM465/NP205 in 32 spline was only available in the K30's from about 82-91. All the military K30's were Auto and 208 so that leaves a handful of civi K30's as possible donors. Seeing as 91 was the last year for the straight axle K30 GM may still have the proper adaptor and all.
