208 swap- shifter location

Discussion in '1973-1991 K5 Blazer | Truck | Suburban' started by **DONOTDELETE**, Mar 7, 2001.

i want to swap my 203 for a 208 that i have from an 81 pickup and need to know if the shifters are in the same location. i could swap the center hump in if not. anyone done this swap? any general comments on 208s? it sure as heck is lighter than my 73, all cast iron 203!!! plus it has lower low range.

The location looks to be similar, however, the shifter for the 208 is physically screwed/bolted to the floor. The 205 and (I think) 203 shifters are connected to the case itself, with just the shifter poking up through the hole. So make sure you get the entire shifter assembly and brackets.

On the '88 that I've been helping a friend disassemble it appears that the floor pan over the t-case is glued to the floor. It doesn't have bolts around the perimeter like my '75 does.

If I were doing the swap, I'd try to find a way to mount the shifter to the t-case instead of the body. I've lost 4-5 range forks in the 208 due to improper shifter linkage adjustment. If the body shifts around, or you lower the t-case, or you tweak the skid plate on a rock, the linkage needs adjusted. I removed the gate from mine to help the problem a bit. Mine also likes to pop out of low range. However my truck has a ton of frame and body flex.

I've never looked at one, but you may want to see if a mid 80's Dodge w/208 had the shifter mounted to the case. I know my '97 Dodge has this setup, with a regular rubber boot on the floor.

As for the floor pan, I think my '83 is screwed down, but not positive.

  5. hey, brian
do your lights still go dim when your 208 is in 2 high? maybe the fluid is low causing a short in the electrical system. LOL!

yeah that must be it. for the advice you game me I would be willing to go up to $12.00 providing the paint is still fresh. seriously, I haven't even looked at it yet but I will this weekend. I thought if I posted that I would lose any stich of
credibility I have on this sight. If you agreed and said it were
fact, they would write you off as a looney as well. Brian
