according to the boook the oil pan has to be removed to replace timing chain set on the 87-up 3.1L GM FWD engines

It wouldn't surprise me. Trying to avoid dropping the subframe?

got down to timing set today, timing chain completely broken, did not have to touch oil pan at all, book is retarded. some RTV will seal it all fine,

accordign to book its 7 hour job, i had it down to timing set within an hour,
3.1L is piece of cake walk
who writes these books anyways ?
    a monkey ?

i hope no valves are bent, i have been told that 1992 3.1L are non-interference type engine

    i hope so,
wish someone knew for sure on that....

Call Autozone and have someone look up a timing set in the computer. It will tell you if it's an interference engine or not.

    they cant tell me,
i have no idea why not.. they just dont know

im at a stand still, i dont know what to do,
meanwhile i have a 92 cutlass supreme with the front of the engine torn down to the face of the block

i put a new hcani on it today and i put the dots both closest to each other and the engine will turn so far and then mechanically stop by hand, so i turned it back and took chain back off and turned the cam 180 and it wouldnt evne go 180 i had to turn the cam a little bit clockwise to get the cam turned 180 so that the dot is now straight up, and then turn the crank back to dot straight up again, and the engine still will turn so far and then it stops hard by hand

    sigh.....

    thanks
