I have a 3-speed manual trans in my truck and i would like to convert to a sm465 trans. I know i have to find one that was backed by a np205 but is the length the same? Thanks

  2. I'm preparing to change my 3 speed manual to the SM465. My truck is a 3/4ton and the three speed is the heavy duty one so it could be different from yours but I bet the overall length is the same. I can't recall, but one of the tranny's is about 1" longer than the other. That should not be a problem for me.

I was told I needed a different bell housing as the hole where the tranny bolts up to the bell housing was apparently different for my three speed and the SM465. Some told me it wasn't, but Advance Adapters said it was different. They should know. I now have a bell housing that fits the SM465 and hope to get the tranny changed in a month or so.

The overall length of the adapter (tailstock), transmission, and bellhousing isn't any different from what I can tell, but the transmission itself I believe isn't the same length. The adapter takes up the difference in length.

Do the mounts match up for the trans and what about the clutch and shifter linkage? Does the SM465 Have a "Low" gear that is even lower then first?
    Thanks,
    Evan

I have an sm465 that I had rebuilt and the np205 was resealed. I only drove it 2 miles when I parked it. The block was cracked. I didnt like the 4 speed as much as I though I would so I want to go to an automatic. I paid $900 to get the trans rebuilt. It also has a new clutch. Let me know if any one is interested. I am in the NY NJ area. Would like to have it picked up rather then shipped. email me if interested. thanks Rich

  10. An article I read said the SM420 is 10.43 inches long and the SM465 is 12 inches long.
