4.56 Gearing with 38\" tires...

I'm going to pick up some 38" tires tomorrow I am buying... I am looking to get some 4.56 gears in axles when I get them. Is this combo going to work? I want this because it should work in my favor a bit more gas mileage wise correct? Thanks! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I'm running 38's with 4.56's. It does get good gas mileage and sits at 2900 rpm at around 70 mph with a th350 and low stall tc. Feels great but then again I'm running a 415ci so a 350ci might require a lower gearing to be the same.

With the OD 4.88s would be a better choice, but 4.56s would be fine if that's what the axles you're getting come with. Wouldn't really be worth the cost to go from 4.56s to 4.88s.

I guess I'm the oddball here. I'm running 39.5s with 4.56s and a mild 355. I got an ex-military D60 front with 4.56s so I just regeared the rear to match.

I have 38's with 4.56's and a 700r4(soon to be a 400/203/205) and I have plenty of power when climbing stuff.

With your OD tranny, I'd go with at least 4.88's.

Only thing is most Dana 60's come with 4.56 that are military and that's what I want. I can't afford to buy new gears plus the axles since I think I may have to go local and spend up da butt for them... /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

In a perfect world, 4.88s or 5.13s would be better with the overdrive. In the real world, I have driven many miles in my Suburban with 3.42s and 33 inch tires, and that is a higher overall ratio than the 38s with 4.56s. You will want to keep it out of overdrive for anything but highway cruising over 60 mph, but it will be plenty driveable.

Too late now to go back... I just got home with da tires... there's still little little hairs on the sidewalls. For used tires they are not very used!! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif /forums/images/icons/cool.gif
