<font color=purple> O.k., I've called Summit, Drivetrain Direct and Reider Racing for price quotes for 4:56 gears and got a range from 420.00 - 506.00. I've never dealt with gears before and want to get the correct ones for my 10 bolts front and rear. A few questions : Reider said that for my year ( 82 ) they only came in 8.5 carriers, is that true ? How do I find out exactly what I have ? I want to get the right ones for my application. Anybody have prices or any other helpful info I could use ? I guess I'm a little unsure of what I'm talking about when I call for quotes and what I'll be needing to order when I do. If anybody can give me some solid quotes and/or info on this it would be greatly appreciated !!!! Thanks in advance !

Yup the carriers are 8.5's that year....and those prices seem about right to me from when I was considering just doing my gears and I started to do the search for upgrades.....

I have used West Coast Differentials, great service and I paid $365. for my 10 bolt front gears. I have a "like new" 3.08 ring and pinion front set if anyone wants to downsize....

I was BS'ing w/ Mylo last time I went up there to get a drop pitman and he knows his stuff. He knows the guys at Ken's too. Mike is the techthere that knows his stuff and Jeff is the owner and has a huge k5 blazer too. I don't know them, but one of the guys I worked with is real good friends w/ Mike and Jeff.

    Steve....

I was looking over past posts and found this one from you. Can you verify that you were able to install a 4.56 into your 10 bolt 3.08. If so.....did you have to get a new carrier or was the 4.56 ring the same diameter as the 3.08. Also...do you have the diameter of the 3.08 ring gear?

    Thanks

    Chris

Steph (or anyone), were there any years that 8.5's weren't used in 10 bolts? I was under the impression that all GM front 10 bolts were 8.5, so if there was a 10 bolt used other than 8.5, A.) What size was it? B.) Would I be correct in assuming it was a rear 10 bolt? I have been know to be wrong before [IMG] so if I am just let me know [IMG].

There is a GM 10 that was not a 8.5". I think it was smaller. I can't remember where I saw this info at, though. Sorry I wasn't any more help. But, I am not aware of anything other than the 8.5s on the Blazer/Jimmy line.

S-Trucks and CamaBirds got the 7.5-inch 10-bolt rear. It might also be found under some other GM rear drivers, but those are the ones I know about for sure.

I know of the 10 bolt "GM 7.5 &amp; 7.625 inch differential, this differential was utilized by GM in it's very popular passenger Car starting in 1977. 1982 GM starting installation in the Camero and Z28 series vehicles, Pontiac Firebirds and Trans AM began using it in 1982. This differential also is utilized in the S-10 series Blazers and Jimmy", but not in the full-sized to my knowledge (that is why I asked). But again, GM did some strange things.

8.5 ring is correct. I went ring&amp;gear shopping today. Dont go to 4wheel parts they'll stick it to you.
They were giving me genuine gear(their brand) 4.88's for$ 225. they told me any other brand would be a special order and take over a week. YEAH RIGHT!!! PAW(performance auto warehouse) has Richmond Gear 4.88's for $161.00 bucks. that is cheap. And even with 4wp price match guarantee they wouldnt match it. The guy at the counter called to verify that price. I walked out of 4wp because they wouldnt get me richmond . I ended up at Paw."great deal."
