Well, I have 39.5s and 4.88s and they work out fine. I also have a healthy big block also. But, I would think you would be ok with 4.88s.
I am thinking of doing 5.13, but only with the 44s.

I have 4:88's with my 38's and a stock 350 TBI with flowmasters and I think it works out great. I had 44" Boggers for awhile and ran 4:56's and then 4:88's and I still think I should of had 5:13's. I think if you do highway driving I would go with the 4:88's. I couldn't imagine anything lower without Overdrive though. I run a 700R4 with my 38's and 4:88's daily back and forth to work and get 10 to 10.5 MPG in the burb. It gets 10.7 MPG on the freeway at 60 MPH.

If you are a dedicated rock crawler, go with 5.13s. If you use it for any other kind of off-roading, go with 4.88s. Isn't 5.13 a bit tall for a D44? Seems to me the pinion would be quite small and, hence, highly vulnerable to breakage.

4.88 would probably work well, I have 5.13's and overdrive isn't a real useful gear so I use 3rd a lot and for going down the road it could stand a little lower motor speed. If your idea of going down the road is 55-60, 5.13's would be OK.
Why bother gearing the D44 to 5.13's? Just save the $ for a D60, you're going to need it if you wheel it very hard. If you don't wheel it hard you'll be OK.
