I am TRYING to swap a 400/208 (from an M1009) to an 86 K5 that was originally equipped with a 700/208, but the damn thing just won't FIT! The crossmember from the M1009 is almost straight across; it seems like the tcase is hitting the body before I can get the crossmember to the frame. Is that M1009 crossmember the problem, or does the (what seems to be) shorter overall length of the 400/208 combo cause the problem somehow (by not tucking up next to the body where a 700/208 would)? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

May have a M1008 crossmember, had the same problem with my M1009 I bought, it had a flat crossmember thrown in the back of it, tried it with my 400/208 combo and did not work. Went back to the place were I bought my Blazer and got one off a M1009 that is curved up on the ends like 3-4 inches and flat in the middle and that one was the ticket! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif The 400/208 should fit almost exactly the same as the 700/208! Maybe try that crossmember /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

And that is possible; I don't know enough about the configuration of the military rigs to know that there is a crossmember diff...just know it came out of a M1009...anyway, you are confirming what I thought, that the crossmember is the culprit. Damn shame too...I like that flat no-tcase-hanging-down-to-get-snagged feature. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well the problem I had was that the fellow that I bought my 1986 M1009 from has about 10 of those trucks around. When the Goverment disposed of them, they were all stripped out with parts thown everywhere inside them. I'm just guessing that your combo was from a M1008 that had the flat crossmember, A crossmember will work for you off a 1984 K10 also! Hoped this helps /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have done this swap twice.

You either need the tall adapter foot and the dropped/flat crossmember, or..
The short adapter foot and the (what I call) the double hump crossmember.

There is no difference in overall length of these two combos. the adapters make up for the difference in the different lengths. No driveshafts will need to be changed, its a great swap.

Also one tidbit of info. A 465/208 combo from the same years is the same length of a 400/208 and 700/208 setup. The adapters account for any differences in length.

A short foot adapter with a flat crossmember? Now that sounds interesting.
