Are the bell housings the same for the sm420 and sm465? I was just wondering for my scout project if it is, I can buy an extra sm465 to rebuild and swap it to my blazer with no down time on that truck.

Nope, they are not. The bellhousing pattern is the same, but not the way it bolts to the tranny.

There are a couple of differences. Biggest difference is the pilot diameter. IIRC 4.667" for the SM420 and 5.125" for the SM465.

kennyw got it. I knew it was something, but I couldn't remember which measurement it was. Either way, it won't work.

kennyw is right on the money with the pilot diameter. Some guys machine a ring to fit the 420 in the 465 bellhousing. Other guys machine the 420 bellhousing to fit the 465. The bolt patterns are the same.

The iron bellhousings come in both sizes. Aluminum ones are just the larger size.
