This is stamped into front axle from a truck I bought for parts. It looks like a 44 on steroids. Never seen hubs that large on a 44 but axle tubes are the same as a 44. What exactly is this?

    Post a pic.

    What year is it from?

The king pin 60's have 4 bolts on the steering arm in a rectangular pattern. They also have 4 bolt covers where the ball joints would be on a 44.

It is probably a D44 with external hubs. The external hubs are rather large. They came on earlier D44's. Pre-76 I think. Not real sure on the exact years. If the tube is the same size as a D44 and it has big hubs, the external hub D44 would be my guess.

They didn't actually make a 1 ton 4x4 until 77 from what I understand. That is when they came out with the D60.

Yup, no such thing as a '73 one ton 4X4, single or dual.

I thought GM quit using external hubs in '68 or so? Maybe a Dodge axle?

It might be a 1ton, but it probably doesn't have a D60. It is probably a D44 HD. There are ways to check if it is a D60 or not, they may be listed above. If not people here know how to tell.

so if it is a HD44 what does the -60F mean after the 44?? And what exactly makes a 44HD different from a regular 44?

No idea what the axle is...but a 60 has four bolts in a square (rectangle) pattern holding the steering arm on (even the closed knuckle versions but then so do 70's) a 44 has three bolts. If it is an original part from a '73 Chevy it is not a Dana 60.
