    \'49 Chevy 1-ton rear??? - 54 Willy\'s Jeep Truck - Any info???

    I'm looking at a '54 Willy's Jeep Truck with a '64 Buick V8 (300), Muncie close ratio 4-speed, unknown t-case, and a '49 Chevy 1-ton rear.

If if anyone has any info on any of these, please feel free to comment. Will be hard to pass up as I may get it for FREE. /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Not to say you should stop looking at it but I would be certain a 49 rear axle will be lack luster if you are looking for a hardcore axle. Older axles often have low spline counts(something like 15 rings off in my head). Someone else may know specifics of that axle I surely don't but I doubt its anything to be excited about.

I'm probley not going to wheel this much besides the occasional trail. I was going to chop the roof since a tree fell on it and try to just cruise it.....ya right thats how it starts anyway.

Would a '49 rear be narrower than we are used to today I assume. You won't offend me I'm just trying to gather some info before I jump into this. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I think they started using the corp. axles that people refer to as Eatons in about 1948, so that may be the axle that is in there.

47-72 for the eaton h052 and h072 axles, and 47-67 on the 420 trannies

if it doesnt have a dana under it then its an eaton corp

If you wanted to update the rear to a newer 1 ton(more readily available parts?) they are an inch or so narrower then the factory willy rear, so they make for an easy swap. I have been done this road. Just want to take it for cruise confortably. Soon youv'e Swapped to chevy axles, then chevy tranny and t-case. Now I'm sitting on a shortened 3/4 ton chevy frame. Good luck I'd grab it up. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
