I get out lock my hubs, I get back in put it in nuetral, I put the selector up in 4WD LO, the 4WD light comes on my instrument cluster, I put it in drive and the light goes out, wham no 4WD (same with 4WD HI)...If I put continued pressure on the floor 4WD selector the light will stay on and stay in 4WD...
this is not acceptable operation...how can I fix this ???

    First, fill out your profile.

Second, sounds like you have either -
    1. worn out chain - would require it opened up and replaced.
    2. misadjusted transfer case shifter - can be done without removing the tc from the truck. Get a Haynes manual or better yet the actual factory service books from '79 ONE TON TPI K5 - See it at---&gt;<a target="_blank" href=http://www.blazzinor.rockcrawler.com>www.blazzinor.rockcrawler.com

Are you sure your 4wd isn't working just because the light goes out?

Sorry if that's a stupid question, but figured I'd ask the obvious first.

I think your shifter's out of whack though...NP 203s have a weird looking shifter.

I know it's not the light, I know the light is just the indicator

The switch is in the shifter. The Lady;s 79 light was intermitant. Turned out the clip that retains the switch was toast. Small radiator clamp did the trick, Had to do the same trick with the brake light switch on both her 79 and my 75.
Your probably in 4wd. get on some loose stuff drop it in low and have a bud watch when you hammer it and see if you spin a front tire.
If it's really poping out of LOC then a few things could cause it. Busted gromits where the rods connect to the shifter is common. I have seen replacments in the help section at Pepgirls. Another biggie on coverted trucks is improperly shimmed part time kits. Grab the rear yoke and pull out and push in on it. you should just feel a 'Hair" of movement. if it is moving a lot then it needs to have the tail shaft reshimmed. Spec is like 1/1000 end play.

Did you make sure you have enough 4WD fluid? [IMG]
