I went to a truck race this weekend... sand drags, mud bog, and a hill climb. One of the guys in my club has an 85 yota with a 350 pushing 1100+ HP and who knows how much torque (a lot). It's built for the sand drags and it screams (4.5 second 1/8th)! We want him to run the mud bog just to see the 60ft rooster tails. The really impressive part is the stock yota front axle and the 12-bolt rear end! The 12-bolt is pretty built but it's still amazing that it stands up to that much power with 36" paddles on it (18" wide). Only two trucks made it through the bog, another toyota from our club and a K5! The yota made it just because it's so light, it has boggers, and has a very healthy 350. The K5 made it because it's a K5! [IMG] Well, it was also lifted 11" with 39" boggers. The guy in the yota had never driven off road before and had just bought the truck from another guy in our club. He said he just closed his eyes and floored it! 7 seconds later he set a speed record for the 35" tire class. It was a fun day, and the best 5 bucks I've spent in a while.

Spinnig tires in the sand and mud, means no traction, no traction no breakage.
If you do not hook-up you don't break, if you apply a slow gradual load to a axle it will last longer than a quick shock load. Vehicle wieght and unsprug weight factor into the equation also.

most of those type of races depend on the fact that the tires are slinging out the mud/dirt behind them, and since there is an equal and opposite reaction, the vehicle is pushed forward..
