I'm going to look at an '84 and an '86 6.2 that are f/s here locally. Anything specific (besides rust of course) come to mind that I need to look out for? It won't be a daily driver for me, and it's not about replacing my gas Jimmy. I checked the tech specs - looks like both years came w/ 700r4's. Anybody running a manual w/ their 6.2? Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated. michael

The engine should be "dry" on the outside/underside. And it should start easy and run without to much nocking when it warms upp. Open upp the airfilter lid and see if the previous owner has a clean filter inn there. That will tell you a litle about maintainse standards. (once a year at least). Ask if you can keep the truck over the weekend and drive it for some long runs paying attention to the oil-level. If you loose a quart over the weekend you'l know why they are trying to get rid of it. Are the battery terminals kept nice and clean, Ask him when he last changed the diesel filter. (Once a year is good) Take a mild incline and do a drop from D to 2 with full trotle and see if it smokes much.Fuel-pumps are expensive and are expected to go out around 200 miles..Execive smoking will tell you something about the pump standard. Ask if it has been replaced allready. If it has and the owner has recipts, theres a good chance the engine will last to 400+ miles.. And check the radiator,(those basters are expensive)
Check that the wiring for the service engine light hasnt been removed(or the bulb) Check for leaks around the fuel return lines by the glow-plugs... Check that the glow-plug light idicates that the glow-plugs stay on for 5-6 seconds, then they should cycle on off 2-3 times and then stay off. Check that the starter is still nice and strong. First make sure batteries are good. They often leak around the valve-covers and it dripps down on the oil-filter.

These are some of the things I should have checked when I bought mine. But I offcource had my pink-sunglasses on and couldnt see or think straight.. Me want me want [IMG][IMG]

Most diesel blazers came with the 700r4. The military (cucv m1009) blazers came with the th400. I have never seen a diesel blazer with a manual and I have heard GM never made any. So after two years of looking for a 4 speed diesel blazer I decided to convert my blazer to a stickshift. Since you are looking at a blazer with an automatic pull the tranny dipstick and smell the fluid, if it smells burnt plan on replacing the transmission in the near future.

Thanks for the replies, fellows. I am highly familiar with the 'me want' part! My wife sez that I ought to get one, that I drive like my grandmother anyway, and that this would ensure that the blue Jimmy doesn't get messed with and stays functional...
I'd be interested how the 4-speed swap goes (which flywheel/clutch?). I'm thinking (dreaming?) 4-speed/doubler/3.42 or 3.73/36's. We'll see; again, thanks for the advice! michael

The 6.2 did come with a 4speed. 40% of the 6.2 gms I have seen around here have 4 speed mauals. I'm in canada, but i doubt that only canadian 6.2s came with a manual. I also belive that th400s did come on normal diesel blazers....not just on the m1009. The 700r4 is the most common but I am 100% sure that a maual was available.
