Cool article Waxer but one thing wrong is that some 3/4 ton 44s came with external hubs so if you get a used axle you may need to buy hubs also.Depends on if your donor axle has them or not.Brady

  4. are 10 bolt and d44 3/4 ton spindals the same-can they be interchanged? also are the ring and pinion and carriers interchangable? I have a d44 with a custom welded truss on top and new ball joints and inner u-joints. unfortunately, it is 6 lug and has 3.42s. currently under my rig is a 3/4 ton 10 bolt with 4.10s. is it possible and/or worth it to swap all this stuff around?

    Great job Waxer!
    BB:
The 10bolt was built by DANA. Infact many of them have a DANA Diamond cast into the pumpkin. Anything from the knuckes out can be swapped. back and forth. You would need too keep all 10 bolt parts or D44 parts but yes the can be swapped. Even the knuckle and outer axle shaft works on both. What can't be swapped is carriers, gears, and inner axle shaft. Those are unique to each axle. The bigest obvious difference is a D44 puts the carrier shims under the bearings and a 10 bolt is outside.
So yes the part used to do the conversion will work on either axle.
Now as for the internal and external hub that was pointed out. with the early 3/4 ton D44's from about 73 down. Fairly hard to get the old style hubs and it's worth the swap to get to the newer style hubs.

  7. hey, grim, what did you mean by this:

"Anything from the knuckes out can be swapped. back and forth. You would need too keep all 10 bolt parts or D44 parts but yes the can be swapped"

so i couldn't say put my 10 bolt 3/4 ton spindle on my d44 knuckle? i would have to swap everything from the knuckles out either all 10 bolt or all 44? i have given up on swapping housings and am thinking of sending my 44 knuckles off to ORD to be machined for cross over steering then put on my 10 bolt. I know this is off the original topic- please don't yell at me!
