My brother just bought a '79 Bronco...(I know this is a sac-religous question.) and changed the oil...the beast took 6 or 7 (caint remeber) quarts to get a full reading on the dip stick!!! this really concerned us...what the hell could be wrong....the owners manual said 5....that sounded almost normal...but 6-7?!?! yikes.....anyone know how long a dipstick for a 400 should be??????

My pontiac 389 takes 6qts. I would think 6qts would be right for a big block ford. They might have ment 5qts in the crankcase then add anther for filter change.

    My moms boyfriend had a 78 ford f-250 with a 400 and it took either 5 3/4 or 6 1/4 quarts.

I worked in a oil change and that is nothing unusual to be putting 6 qts in the bronco there We used to put that much in 4 banger fords..
