\'66-\'67 era 396 out of an SS Chevelle for $600

A friend of mine has a 396 motor that he says is a factory SS Chevelle 396 motor. It's all apart, block (.030 over I think), steel crank, rods, pistons, heads... everything but the cam and intake/valve covers. Anyone know what front numbers to look for to tell if it truly is out of what he says it is?

He wants $600 for it, in case anyone is interested. I thought about trying to buy it, but it would have more value to someone looking for a numbers matching motor.
