My 90 K5 has a 700r4 and it shifts irradically. The 1 to 2 shift is hard and all other shifts are soft. the kickdown doesn't seem to want to work sometimes (when you give it the gas, it will stay in high gear) Is there something common that goes wrong with these things that is easy to fix? Thanks!

The first thing to check is to see if you have good clean "RED" tranny fluid and to make sure it is full.

After that, sounds like maybe you might wanna check your TV cable for adjustment. www.nashvillek5.freeservers.com

How long have you had the truck? It sounds like the previous owner installed a shift kit (firmer shifts) especially from 1st to 2nd. And the late kickdown sounds like an upgraded valve causing the tranny to hold in overdrive longer. Holding OD longer at freeway speeds is a good thing, because the quick downshift and upshift will cause heat build up when prolonged. Just give it more gas if you really need it to kick down. I'm not a tranny expert so I could be wrong. Your's sounds a lot better than my 700... I only have first and second gear [IMG] The new one is on its way. Hope this helps.

My rebuilt 700 has a shift kit in it, and shifts hard from 1-2 and softer for the rest. Also I have to get to about 3/4 throttle before it will down shift.

When my first 700 went out you would have to rev the motor really high to get it to shift out of first, and when it shifted it felt like someone kicked you in the spine, and with my experience with 700 is nothing is cheap or easy to fix.

My Chevy isn't broken, its just out of gas.

It REALLY sounds to me like the TV cable isn't adjusted properly. It will change the "feel" of the shifts, and not set up right, it can be either extremely harsh or extremely sloppy. There have to be a bunch of places online that describe the proper procedure, might try checking www.dorianyeager.com/index2.html
Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?

hey foxman. had the same problem a few months back. shift real hard (banging) from 1st to 2nd, or wouldn't shift out, all erratic. Had a shop drop the pan and do a complete cleaning, filter, blahblahblah, and she shifts perfect now. The valves that slide back and forth in there were grimed up. Good luck. help this helps.

check the TV cable...that's likely to be the problem. not on mine though....i can't get 1st with the pedal FLOORED. And I get second about 50% of the time. I need to start taking it apart to check where the detent system on the inside.
