Found a cool link on another board I frequent:
    747 thrust
There's loads of other cool vids on the site, but lots are definitely NWOKF, so be aware of your surroundings if you check them out...

I love "Top Gear"!!!

They must have better connections over there, Mythbusters couldn't get anything near big enough to do the job over here...

Nah, the MythBusters ran into overzealous safety regulators in not getting the real deal plane when they tested that out. Maybe they'll get the message soon and decide to start filming all the more ambitious myths outside the state of California (Texas perhaps?) where they won't be hamstrung by as many safety regulations.

Oh Lord, save me from that mess.
That heated discussion is STILL going on in the Tech discussion forum at airliners.net. Buncha people that should know the answer are alternately intellectually masturbating each other and insulting each other...

"If the engines run at full thrust for more than 20 seconds they will rip the surface off the runway.

That ought to tell you something.

I've been on plenty of TRT (takeoff rated thrust) engine runs on the KC-135 (Boeing 707) with the CFM-108 engines. The jet shakes a lot, sometimes jumps chocks, sometimes gets a compressor stall, but never rips up the tarmac. :dunno:

Supposedly it's something specific to 747's, at takeoff power, on asphalt. I'd never heard of it before either...
I know a Harrier will destroy asphalt in a hurry when the nozzles are vertical at high power settings...
I've heard that some tactical jets can only do afterburner turns on a concrete surface, but I don't have confirmation on that...
