I went to the salvage yard today and found a 14bolt that looks like it will fit but I don’t know. What I did was measure from spring pad to spring pad on the axle that’s on the K5 now. The measurement was about 45”. I say about because I had to move it over the diff cover. Looked at and measured about 25 14bolts that look good but did not meet the measurements of mine. I finally found one that had the same measurements as mine, 45”. The axle’s diff cover had “79 Chevy k20 written on it and had a tag with the same thing, but also had 4.56 too. Will that axle bolt right in?

    Thanks,
    Charles

It should. Any 14 bolt out of a 3/4 ton should work. Not the 1 ton. 4.56 gears? You dog!

why wont the one ton work? i always thought that they were the same length. I also thought that 14 bolts only came stock with 4.10 and 3.73. did someone put those 4.89s in it afterwards?

A 3/4 ton 14FF will bolt right in. One ton spring perches have to be moved. As for the gears my D60/14FF came with 4.56s.

Thats what I though but, I was unsure which model was the 3/4 ton. Is the K20 3/4 ton?

The one tons had a narrower frame. You can move the perches and it will work fine. You could get 4.56's not common. Military rigs I think most had 4.56's

Sandman, there were many 14blts there that had the perches futher out. I thought those were the 1 ton. The one I found was the only one that had the perches that close.

Ok, My blazer with 14 bolt rear measures about 43" from spring center to spring center. I got my axles off of an '84 1 ton and had to trade in the rear because both perches were like a 1 1/2" to narrow. Hope this helps.

The Dana 60 front is a bolt in. No problems there.

My 14b came from a 77 3/4 ton...Bolt in except for the shock mounts. They hung to low for the shocks to reach. Had to cut them off and re weld them higher up on the tube. Simple though, about 15 minutes for each one. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

    Hey Sandman
Not to split hairs or anything but so you know.
The one ton frames arent narrower, the spring hangers are.

You are correct, and thanks for pointing that out. I know some people get upset about being corrected but I would rather cut down on the number of times that I look dumb. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
