I'm going to be rebuilding an 8.5 rearend and would like to know approximately what size pinion shim I should start with. This rearend was disassembled by someone other than me so I have no idea as to what the original shim size was. I will be putting 3.42 gears in.Any suggestions as this is my first rearend build?

Ouch. Without a service manual it's hard to say. The factory service manuals will give you abseline to start with, and there is an etching on the end of the pinion gear that gives you a number on how much to deviate from the baseline to start with. Unfortunately you need a pinion depth tool to use these numbers.
