    \'80 Chevy Shortbox... 292 or 250 6-cylinder?

A guy I know has an '80 Chevy Shortbox 4x4. It has an original (I think) 6-cylinder with a 4spd and 205. I'm trading some parts to him to get the 4spd and t-case, and today he stopped by and said I could have the motor as well.

He says it runs excellent, and that it's a 292. I thought 292's were older motors and 250's were used starting in the '70's through '80 or so.

If it is the factory motor in 1980 which he says it is, would it be a 292 or 250?

292 I-6's were in 3/4t & 1t's only. Watch the 250, of this vintage for a easily cracked head. These engines have a head that the intake & head are cast togeather. These were a poor design. It is possible though that someone swapped a 292 in. They are great (???) on power, but terrible on gas mileage. They will pull a house down, and are a pretty good 4x4 engine, as they are very torqy. Good luck!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Don't part that truck out....just buy it complete the way it is!!!!!!!

Look at the blue truck pic down below for my sig. Thats an '81 K10 SWB with a 250/465/208 and 3.73 gears. This truck ran like a top. Got me 18 mpg!!!

Buy that truck the way it is and use it for a daily driver. Those 250's are way damn reliable motors!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

Should be a 250. But the vintage on the 250 is alot longer then that. My buddy has a 66 chevy with the 250 in it stock from the factory. His grandfather bought it new in 67 and it was passed down. So they have been around for awhile. I agree with ThatK30guy though, buy the whole truck and run it. Don't part it out. The 250 is an awesome little motor.

The guy I know that owns the truck is building it up. I'm just getting motor, tranny, and T-case out of it. He's got a 350 and automatic going into it as well as an '84 cab and front clip, 4" lift, 33" tires etc...

Since he says the motor was such a good runner, I'm considering putting it in something for mileage. I havent looked at the motor yet to see if it's the integrated head design.

The 292 has offset motor mounts while the 250 has motor mounts straight across from each other (same frame mounts as the small block/big block chevy motor). The 292 is a great motor from what I have heard and many guys with the old 1950's chevy pickups look for that motor as an upgrade to the old stovebolts that came in their trucks originally (no replacement for displacement theory).

my old 78 Blazer had an 84 250 I6 (truck style) in it...it had a 2bbl intake/carb and a dual outlet exhaust manifold...
I loved that engine. It sounded like a Cessna with the duals/glasspacks. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

    I have a 1970 stepside 1/2 ton (C-10) with the original 292 in it.

you might could check over at www.inliners.org lots of knowledgable people over there regarding I-6's. Their casting number page (under "historical") shows the numbers for a 292 in 1980, but it doesn't tell what it came in...of course, you can see if the casting numbers match the motor in the truck /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
