I may have found my donor truck. Haven't seen it yet, but got a email from a guy with a 81 1 ton truck. (In need of help) What would it have for motor, transmission, transfer case, and gears ???

either a sm465/205 or 400/205. Engine could be anything straight 6/350/454. Gears most often 410 or 373. No way of telling without looking at it /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

1 ton what? Chevy? Ford? Dodge?

Assuming Chevy as this is a Chevy site...

    Automatic? Manual?

Ok, we're still assuming. It most likely has a 350 in it. I wouldn't say that it'd be impossible to have an inline six cylinder, but it's very unlikely. It could have a 454 too. I don't believe the 6.2 was available until 82, so it's most definitely gas.

    Transmissions...two options TH 400 or SM 465

Transfer case, most likely an NP 205

Front axle, definitely a D60 with most likely 4.10 gears

Rear axle, 14 bolt full floater, most likely 4.10s again with or without a Gov lock

Most likely a single piece front shaft with a 1310 u joint, a 1330 CV, and a rear two piece shaft with all 1350s.

That's assuming it's not a Dodge, Ford, or God only knows what else could be referred to as an "81 1 ton truck" that could be a 3/4 ton for all you know.

like was stated, however a general rule of thumb with 1 tons is the smaller the engine the lower the gears. 90% of small block 1 ton's have 4.56's and 90% of big blocks came with 4.10's. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I guess both of my 1 tons are in that 10% range, because both of my 1 tons have 4.10 gears and both had 350s from the factory. What a crock.

Why wouldn't it have a NP 208? 81 was the intro year for that T-case and it was used in the CUCV's...

Gearing...I'd guess 4.10's unless it had a straight 6 in it.

I don't know why the CUCVs used NP 208s. I know my 1 ton had an NP 205, and so has every other one I've seen besides the military ones. Seen plenty of K20s with 400/208 combos, but I've yet to see a K30 set up that way.

How odd, you'd think the military would spec the 205 and GM would give all the civi's the less stout 208.

I was just kind of curious about that...the only K30 I've ever seen was Wes's about 2 years ago.

Not all CUCVs have the NP 208. I know what you're saying though, makes no sense to me at all. You'd think that the military would want a tougher rig, but they are mostly 208s. Who knows, maybe they wanted the better low range or something.

Okay, found out it has a 454, sm465/NP205, and 4:56 gears. Now I'm getting more and more intrested in swaping the whole drive train into the K5. I could handle a 454 under the hood. Yep, might just have to do it. Still waiting on pics and a price.

[/ QUOTE ] Those are in a garage. I've been in no hurry becouse I've been hunting a Dana 60. This K30 parts truck is becoming too good of a deal to pass up on. 454, sm465/NP205, and 4:56 gears. When would I do the swap, whenever I get around to it. I try not to get in a hurry over anything, couse when I do, everything gets all f_cked every time, LOL.
