I need help from the experts! I am looking at an 89 3/4 this afternoon. Do all of those have the 400 series trans or do some have the 700R4? I want an 89, 90 or 91, is one year better than the other? Do all 3/4 tons have the tow package and all of the oil coolers? If they don't what do I look for to see if it does? If there is any other info that you think is important please let me know! Thanks for all your help>

    89 and 90 had th400s, 91 had either a th400 or a 4l80E. You really want a 4l80E, its basically a th400 with an OD.

...but, of course, I have a biased opinion /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Yep, that was what I was going to say. If at all possible find a 91 3/4 ton Sub with an Auto with OD. It is a 4L80E mated to a NP 205 if I remember right. From what I understand it was the only year that combo was offered, and it is a very desireable combo. Any year 3/4 ton Sub is good, but 91 is about the best.

    Actually, a '91 Sub 3/4T w/ OD is a 4L80E mated to a NP241 case...

yeah, an 89 would have a th400 and np241. The last year for the 205 was 1980.

What case did the 1 ton's have in 91? Maybe it was the 91 one tons with the 205. There was something special about the 91 something where it had a 4l80e backed by a good case. At least I thought so.

    1991 V30s had the 4L80E/NP205 setup.
    My '88 V20 suburban has a TH400/NP208.
Just bought a NP241 'case from a 1990 suburban that had a Th400 and uses the electronic VSS instead of the mechanical speedo.

That's awesome if they put a 205 in those in 91. That's a strong combo. I thought they stopped in 80, but maybe thats only for the half tons. Yeah 1980 was the last year for 205's in jimmys and blazers.

Not sure about the 1 tons having a 205...

Since I have a '91 V2500, it's definitely NOT a 205. Now you've got me curious! Time for my favorite search engine to engage...

I'm possitive about the '205 in the '91.
I ran across a 1991 V3500 crew cab dually 4x4 at the junk yard. It had a 6.2/4L80E/NP205 in it.
Only thing wrong was the trans was bad. I tried to buy it, even left my name and #, but not for sale. It was some old guy who knew an employee at the yard. Truck had sat for 2 yrs with bad trans and he still wouldn't sell.

    Yep, you are right.
    I've got a 4L80 + NP 208.
A 205 with lower gears would be nice!!

    Your 208 case must not be original...should be a 241C. A 208 case in a '91 would require a retrofit.

The 208 used a cable for the speedometer, whereas the 241C uses a VSS at the case. '90-'91 is a VSS at the case and an electronic speedo. '87-'89 used a VSS also, but it was in the dash cluster.
