\'89 blazer pings on part throttle acceleration

    Hey all,
I'm really liking my newly purchased '89 Blazer. Way better than one of them sissy import SUVs. ;-) But, it has a minor problem. Driving on a flat road at say 60 mph, it'll ping a little when I give just a little more throttle. Hills do the same thing. Down shifting out of OD reduces the ping. Engine has 150k, new plugs and rotor. I'm using 87 octane fuel. Running 31x10.5x15s with 3.43 diff ratio. stock tranny. More throttle stops the pinging. Otherwise runs great! I'm thinking manifold leak of some kind, or carbon deposits. Anyone had something similar or know of a common cause for this problem? Or am I due for a lengthy trouble-shooting session?

Check your EGR valve, also check the knock sensor & conector. Make sure vacuum line are all good too /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    too much timing advance?

The timing on an 89 is computer controlled. I'll second the knock sensor.

try the gas run a higher octane it'll slow the burn of the fuel and reduce the pinging ummm i think /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It might get rid of the pinging, but it would be covering up a problem, not fixing it. $.10/gallon more ends up costing a fair amount of money on these trucks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Replace the Knock sensor. Mine was disconnected and pluging it up didn't help. Finally replacing the knock sensor fixed it.

Check knock-sensor. You can "ask" the computer if there are any codes. It should tell you if it is getting a reading from the knock sensor.

Could also be dirty injectors and/or carbon buildup on the pistons. Try running two tankfuls of Chevron 89 or 91 octane through it. Don't run cheap-o gas. I keep finding water in Arco gas - and sometimes my fuel-pumps would rust out!

    Good luck.
