hmmm... not really, i drive an 89 GMC suburban and nothing really comes to mind when i think about things to look out for. i like mine A-LOT! i have a 350/350 so i don't know about the 400 but it's the strongest GM automatic out there i know that. my engine has 153,000mi on it and it's starting to get tired but still runs great. i'll admit, it's left us on the side of the road a time or two (you would too if you were carrying around a boy scout troop almost every weekend) but it's been very dependable. overall, i would go for the Suburban out of the two. go see mine in my link or the members rides.

I have an 89, w/ a 350 and 700r4, i love it! it burns a little oil,123,000 but runs great. I got a trans cooler, just in case, but no problems yet(knock on wood). Rust is the only thing w/ mine, and some elec gremlins in the power window.

I would look everywhere for RUST and for cracks in the frame around the steering box.

ok went to see the burbs. one is a 89 2500 with a 350,400 combo. has manual hubs 4x4. the other is a 84 sub with a 454 dual exhaust, dana rear but bad body and interior and only 2wd. wants 1800 for the 84 and 4000 for the 89. the 89 will also need paint and little cosmetic work. which would you go for.i

Go for the '89, but are you sure it has a T-400? It would be nice, but as far as I know they came with a 700R4.
An 454 rig would be nice, but it depends on what you want to do with it. My guess is that you will put at least $4000 into the thing to convert it to 4x4, including purchase price. If you were going to do that, why waste your time and money with a D44 or a 10 bolt. You would most likely want to go for the D60.

<font color=blue> I'd go with something that you won't have to convert.

it has a 400, and a crate 350 the 89 sub that is. the 454 has brand new dual exhaust. my concern is the price on the 89 he wants 4000. the truck is gonna need a paint job and interior work mechanically it sounds and feels great. the truck has little rust for a rust belt truck. still a paint job is in order. ( it used to be a fire truck, volunteer f.d.) and still there is the fact that i have to sell my blazer. don't know what i should offer. would like to get it for about 2500. then spend the other 1500 on needed upgrades. what do you think.
