8th digit on VIN is a \"J\", whats that?

i tried to decode the VIN on this chevy cab i have, and it shows the letter "J" in the "engine type and make" section. as shown in my Chiltons manual, this "J" should be for an "El Camino Only" which is a 4.4L v-8 2 barrel found only in an el camino. can anyone help? thanks.

"J" is usually the code for a diesel engine when it comes to light duty trucks. What year is your truck? If it's early 80s then chances are your truck was originally equipped with a 6.2.

    "J" code = 6.2L diesel (non-EGR) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actually, depending on the year of the truck, "J" doesn't always mean diesel. I believe in the mid to late 90s "J" was the code for a 454 and GM started using "F" for the 6.5.

    Just a little FYI. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yeah, on my 98 Sub the "J" means 454 if it was a 350 it would be "R" I believe.

Because it's a Chilton's manual! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif The factory service manual set has about 5 times as many pages as a Chiltons or Haynes, plus the factory manual set is specific to a single year, while the other two typically try to cram in data from a wide range of years. So guess which one has the most info available? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My RPO code book lists the "J" for an '88 to have the 6.2L diesel.
