The front axle is centuraly dissconnected.
When 4WD is selected, current is provided to the front axle actuator (round cyl on the long side of the front diff). The curent heats up the Freon (pretty dang sure its freon) in the actuator. The freon expands and engages a fork, the fork is attached to a splined collor that slipps over the front axle shaft and the front axle stub-shaft that is bolted to the half-shaft.

So, it engages via Electro-Thermal coupler.

There is a G.M. updateed Actuator thats is Electro-Mechanical and can be retro-fitted to the vehical.

    G.M. part numbers:
26060073 ACTUATOR ASM, FRT DRIVE AXLE
    22510339 FASTENER
    15313272 HARNESS, JUMPER (Z SPLICE)(88-93 K1-3)
