I'm looking at buying a newer truck, probably a 96-99 K1500, 2500, or 3500. If it's a 1500 it will be a reg cab shortbox with a 350/60e, otherwise I'm looking for a K2500 or 3500 with a 350 or 454 and a 4L80e. I would like to know your experiences with your trucks, the gas mileage you get, and for those of you with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks, does the small block have enough power for you or would you be happier with the 454? I don't do a whole lot of towing, but I know that a TBI 350 doesn't have enough power for my tastes. Any experiences would be appriciated. Thanks...

We have a '96 Yukon with a 350 and just barely over 100 thousand miles. Still pulls strong and havent had any problems with the tranny and engine which is surprising because we have abused it offroad to its limits for the last 7 years. It gets on average about 14 mpg but i have a pretty heavy foot, on long trips it gets about 17. Hope that helps!

99 yukon 4wd with 350/4l60e gets about 15 in town and about 16 on long runs. weak tow rig, but not geared for it. 3.73s are more of a city gear for an suv, imo. my 99 c3500 with 454/4l80e gets 10 no matter what with its 4.10s but towing is much better. seems to be shift happy unless its pulling something down the highway. in my experience, the wifes yukon pulls stronger than the tbi 454 powered c3500 my buddy has. i wouldn't take the 24' wells cargo on a cross country behind the yuke, but it did feel like the difference in tpi over tbi made up for the displacement difference.

97 yukon, 350/60E/3.42 gears (hey, wasn't my choice.../forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif), gets around 15-17mpg, maybe 14 in town. and considering that i'm young and use the stupid pedal excessively, thats not half bad /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the responses... I drive a 96 K1500 extra cab at work, and it has way more power than any TBI truck I've driven. I'm also looking at 2-door Tahoes and Yukons... I won't do much towing with a 1/2 ton, but if I get a 3/4 ton it better be able to pull 8K pounds of trailer down the interstate at 85 MPH... With the cruise on...

Yes I have, but if I do it'll be a Cummins, and I would really like to keep a Chevy in the garage...

Anyone else out there have any experience with the vortec trucks? I'd really like to hear from those of you with 3/4 and 1 tons and those of you with 454's... I've been looking at Dodge trucks with diesels, but I don't want to spend that much and I'm not sure if I'll be able to live with myself if my driveway doesn't have at least one Chevy in it...

My mom had a 97 GMC CC dually with the 454. I think it got around 12 or 13 mpg. It had lots of power and would pull real well. Rode like crap in the back seat when unloaded, front wasnt near as bad, and was really smooth with a nice load on it.

i had a 97 chevy ext cab short box 2500 with the vortec 350 auto and 4.10's. got about 14-15 mpg on the highway. towing my k5 it would get about 10 at 65mph, was a real good truck, but i wanted more hp. i ended up getting a 2001 chevy 2500hd with the 8.1 allison and i love it. i think both of the vortecs are good engines, try to drive each one to see how you like them and go from there. good luck
