Well folks I have been busy making my new love road ready....a 85 Z-51 Red Corvette. Ran into the same problem that I did with the Blazer in that the A/C did not work well. And I got lucky and found a great product that saved me 500.00 bucks and has the A/C working like a new one. It is called "Enviro-Safe". It can be installed into a system that has R-12 in it already or complete installation new. It is legal and enviormentally safe. And at 6.00 a bottle it is a heck of a lot better then 100.00 a pound for R-12.
I bought it off of Ebay from (email) www.autorefrigerants.com Now before all the hoopla starts, I am a certified MVAC Tech....got my card from www.qwik.com you too can be certified, the cost is 20.00 and you download the manual then take an open book test consisting of 25 questions. You have to get 21 right, then they give you a printable temp card...the real deal plastic card comes in the mail in a week or so. That allows you to buy and install freon for auto's only per EPA part 609. What a deal...any questions...just ask I will be glad to help. Take care all...

Hey eagle congrats on the vette. I've got an 86 with a butt load of aftermarket parts from lingenfelter to the dual friction clutch. Plus I've gone through thousands of problems including a/c. So if you've got any technical questions I'm absolutely sure I can help you on that car. Plus I've made every mistake in the book and after drag racing it when I was in the military it's about to get it's 4th engine and 3rd tranny. But none the less it hauls!! Sorry about the non K5 reply guys, but corvette's are my passion!!!

Did you run a bottle of the leak stop thru prior to recharging the system? Is it worth the extra money to run a can of it thru? I have a 1990 and the air is not even close to being cold. It has a sticker under the hood stating that it was serviced in 1999 and a leak dye was added at that time.

I don't want to fork over big $ for a shop to do any work.
In your oppinion would this stuff work for my truck?

If you email those folks for whom I left the email address the kit , for 36.00, comes with 2 cans of Enviro-safe, one can of stopleak/dye/oil a hose and tapper. You system HAS to have the new 134 connections on it first. As it stands I just added one can to mine and now it is bloody cold...much more then any 134 I have tried on the blazer. I am now going to get all the 134 out of the blazer and refill it with enviro-safe...it works well! And it is cheap compared to what you will pay to go with R-12 or changing over to 134.

thanks for the offer, you can believe I will ask questions as I need to. The vette is something else, I got it for 6k and now have just one pesky electrical problem to battle then all is well.A fuse keeps popping that controls the coutesy lights, radio and door lock....at first it would just happen when I turned the radio off and the antenna stars down....but now everytime I put in a fuse it will pop a few minutes later. I am about to just jumper the fuse and see what smokes....hehehehehehe not!
At any rate I am going to replace the tired old 305 in the Blazer with a 330hp crate and a zz4 for the vette....

OK that all sounds great. I was told when I bought the truck everything worked great. But how can you check the A/C when it's 15 degrees out side when your test driving.

Just one simple little question. How do I know if I have the R134 hookup?

theres supposed to be a sticker on your condensor coil or your compressor stating that it has been converted, that is if it was done by a certified shop.

My dad found another product that requires none of the 134 fittings, this is a direct replacement for R12, and it works great (or at least in his Burb it does). You need a card to buy it, but it is only $5.00 a can. It is called Freeze12. I plan on doing mine this weekend, after 3 years wo AC this will rock. I plan on replacing all O-rings and the dryer so hopefully I will have no leaks.
Just thought I would mention another R12/R134 alternative.

Good lord. The rod up that man's butt must have a rod up it's butt.

My home A/C guy, best local drinking bud, (very cool) said he could charge my sys up with some new stuff called 4014 or something like that. But we can go R-12 if I want. Says he wont charge me for the gas either way. But I'd have to buy the adapters for his guages to fit.
You all keep us updated on the new products so I can make a sound decision on which to use!!

Sheesh,
It must be nice to even have a AC to work on. My Blazer lived its entire life in the desert and came from the factory without A/C. :(

mine came from the factory WITH ac, but when some moron before me changed the heater core he too EVERYTHING out that was ac related. (including the control module in the cab, and all the ducts!)

now I'm gonna have to put all the crap back in! [IMG] in my other K5 I'm getting the ac converted over and a new compressor for $250.

Speaking of duct work!!! Has anyone ever had a problem with the directional control part of the duct work going bad?
Here's what I mean. When I select say heat to the floor, it still comes out all the vents, or visa versa. Air comes out all the holes you cant control where it goes. What may be the first thing to check? The linkage is still connected from what I can tell. You can hear some stuff moving aorund in there but the direcion doesn't change, well it does, but doesn't really seal the other off.

I think that there's a vacuum motor there that goes haywire/gets weak - my Granddad's 84 has had that problem since it was around 2 years old, and my 85 has done it ever since I've had it.

The control gate is right behind the glovebox - it's the closest of the two controls on top of the plenum. As for the vac motor, if memory serves correct, it's closer to the ashtray. The control rod does have some adjustment in it, I just can't figure out how to do it.

10-4. That helps alot. That will have to be a project real soon. Its too damn hot and muggy here. Specailly when it rains and you have to roll the windows up with no air.
