so how much do you think a welder could make if he were offered a job to go down to Mississippi and weld gas lines and stuff?? my jackass friend, 17 or 18 years old, said he has been doing some welding, less than a years experience, and i doubt any proper training, and he said a company offered him and 3 or 4 others to go down there for a contract of 7 years for (here's the kicker) $100 a day for rent, and $150/hr for 94hrs/week... now that's an inexperienced welder making over $763,000 a year... even divided between the four people its over 190 grand a year. i know the first number is out of it, but could a welder (maybe if he were damn good at his job) have that kind of oppurtunity to make almost $200,000 given the circumstances in Mississippi? what do you think about other trades?? just wondering. oh and do you have dumbass friends like this also??

I've never heard of an inexperienced welder getting that much. That sounds more like a pipe-fitters pay.

Pipe fitters are the lesser paid. My father inlaw is a pipeline welder and he prob averages around $40 hr.

Underwater welders make bank. Other than that, most are no more than $40-$50 hr at the very high end.

This would be the second time I've heard of outrageous pay for totally unrelated jobs down in the Hurricane area.

I watched a caravan of setup welding rigs with camper trailers in tow, all from Idaho going south. Could be some truth to the "lump sum" for a crew.
But how long could you last at 90+ hrs per week in swamp land.I think any "trade" could earn some fast money, but for how long?

Fist you must have certs. To weld on gas lines!!! The way this works Is you get about $80.00 Hr. for a welder with certs. and about the same for your Truck and Welding Machine and all your Consumables. This Is the only way I have ever see any Company pay over $150.00 Hr. But I can get up to $280.00 Hr. just for a welder In Iraq!!!

I don't have any idea what welders make, but FEMA is paying truck drivers $1,400/day to sit all over the place with stuff on their trailers. I spoke to one who was paid that for 5 days while sitting with a full load of water. This was 2 weeeks after Katrina. If you could do that for a year its about $500,000.
