I was thinking about it, and realized why pay $600 for an Xbox 360, when I could have an AK? What do I need to know before I start looking for one?

    1. Are there brands/countries to avoid, or look for?

    2. What kind of price range am I looking at?

    3. Would it be better to look for a newer one, or would I be ok if I get an older gun?

A complete AK are a dime a dozen.
Most can be had for for around $300
A roll yer own is pretty easy from what I have read.

Check out gunbroker.com for a ready to run rig.
There are shloads of kits in all diffrent forms to be had. pop a few rivets and ya have it.
I haven't realy looked into them that much as I am not a fan of the AK.
But I have read a few posts on them and even the simple minded slobbering idiots are building them, so it can't be that hard to do.
    :D

One good thing with them is milsurp ammo is still available cheap.

Be aware that any milsurp rifle ya get will need the required 922r compliant parts to make it legal.

There are 20 evil foriegn parts, of which no more than 10 can be on said rifle.
The FAL only needs 7 (6 if ya don't use a muzzle device).
I believe the AK has 10 parts that need to be swapped out.

Man, guns are really cool and all, but you'll get a lot more use out of a Xbox 360. Either that or a 10/22. You can shoot those out your bedroom window and no one cares.

Meh, I could build one but why take the liability when you can get a WASR for $325, I just don't want to have to worry about all that 922r shiat. I've got my eye on a Yugo underfolder that is much better quality than the WASR but it's $450.

All hail the mighty Kalashnikov !!!!

    AK-47's rock,,,,

Fired 2500 rounds through one of mine in a weekend,,,,threw it in the safe for 4 months,,,never cleaned it,,,pulled it out,,,, kicked the bolt open and ran another 2500 down the pipe...

never missed a beat or jammed....try that with an AR,,,

I swear you could drag an AK-47 through a swamp or bury it in a pile of dirt and the thing would come out firing,,,,,

The time to buy those was years ago, BEFORE Feinstein/Boxer/Schumer/Brady bought theirs.

weapons with crappy tolerances tend to be reliable. Having used both, I'd rather have an AR in every circumstance except for super close up work (ie, inside a building).

    wastedwages,
The gun on the top left is that a colt python in 357 or 44. I had a chance to buy a colt Python brand new for $500 a couple of years ago when a shop was closing and didn't. I always remember that and wish I would have.
