Before I get serious about "begging" for a 7909 deck for my K5 I wanted to ask if anyone has tried playing CD-Rs in one? These decks were designed LONG before CD-R even existed as a technology, so I'm guessing they don't......but you never know until you ask.

Anyone with direct, personal experience want to help me answer this one?

    Mudhog....

    I wish !!!! [IMG]

The 7909 has been out of production for probably 10 years...IMHO still one of the best CD units made, and they are somewhat available if you are willing to beg (and pay lots of money....right Ryan!!!)

I had a "wild hair" to get one of these classics for my K5, but then I remembered that CD-R is part of my consideration...I burn my own mixed music CDs and I really need to know that I can play them.

If you happen to know of someone that has a 7909, I'd be happy to know about it....

    Thanks,

    -Greg72

Come on Greg, you're starting to make me feel bad. lol It would be so easy for me to open up my 7909 stuff and see if a CD-R would work, but we both know I can't do that...not yet anyway. Like I told you before, the a/d/s stuff is few and far between around here, but Alpine stuff is really popular. I'm going to make some calls and see if I can't find another 7909 for you. I'm about 99% sure I know someone else that has one, but I have no idea whether he'd be willing to part with it or not. I'll toss you an email if I find out anything.

    Ryan,

Don't sweat it on the a/d/s/ stuff.....I am having good success finding it through my own sources. So far I've located a total of (4) PQ20 amps (1600 Watts!), and a 642ix crossover.... All I need is the head unit, 4 subwoofers (10" or 12"), midbass drivers, midranges and tweeters.

I you can find a 7909 for me that would be AWESOME!!!! I can occasionally find them on e-Bay, but it would be nice to get one from a "known source"....especially for such an expensive part!

    Thanks for the help

Ain't that just the way it always is...on Ebay I mean. From time to time I check for 7909's there and it ALWAYS seems like the seller only has like 0 or 1 transactions on Ebay. There are 2 on there right now and both sellers are like that. I tend not to buy anything there unless they have a long, good history.

    Ryan,

FWIW...I'd been watching an auction on e-Bay for a "NEW IN BOX" 30th Anniv 7909. Absolutely perfect....auction just ended last night with a final price of $880.

I would have liked to have been "in" on that auction, but without knowing about the CD-R thing, I just couldn't do it..... anyway I thought it was an interesting data-point for you in case you haven't been following the market prices for the 7909s.

    Later,

    -Greg72

BTW -> Seller had (0) feedbacks, and so did the buyer!!!! Best of luck guys..... [IMG]

There is an eBay auction for one. But it says it is need of repairs. However I thought I would post it anyhow.... http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1235019016

Yes, they do show up on e-Bay surprisingly often. Even some that are "NEW" in box 30th Anniv ones....

Usually sell for around $800 - $900 in mint condition.

I think I'm just going to forget about the Alpine and go with Sony's C90. It's around $1000, it has skip protection and even higher output voltage than the Alpine. Besides, I've got (4) a/d/s amps just sitting in my garage now, and they're waiting patiently for a deck to drive them..!!! [IMG]
