I just changed my alternator this weekend and it took about 20 mins. Get a crow-bar to pry on the tension adjuster so you can get the belt off the alternator. Unscrew the 3 bolts holding it on and it just pops out. Reverse the procress and make sure the belt is correctly in place.
I'm assuming an 85 has a serpentine belt. Correct?

You know if you have tools, you can buy rebuild kits for about $20. They aren't complex.
